Last Nights Lobster Private Charter Report

I had another private lobster charter last night, I was expecting it to be a great early crawl, boy was I wong. We had our nets in the water around 5PM, 30 minutes later we started checking them and we found nothing. The high tide in or area was around 7:30 so I thought it would just be awesome from the start, wrong........from 5:30 to 8PM we only had four bugs, then around 8:30 it was on, why they wanted to walk during a slack tide i don't know, but I was glad they did, we ended the night with 12 legals, threw back 6 shorts. after the wind backed down, it became a nice night. bait as always was salmon heads and we fished everything from 25-42 feet. I have a few more lobster trips booked for the next few weeks so I'll be posting more reports. Last thing, if you have not used the new LED light sticks from Promar you should, these things work great!

Free Kids Fishing Event at Legg Lake Recap

This past Saturday my youth foundation hosted a free kids fishing event, most of the money for this event came from a grant that the Montebello Police Dept got to keep kids out of trouble. Since this was a first time event for us, we didn't know how many kids we'd have for the event. About 250 kids and their families attended, for many of the kids it was the first time they had ever been fishing. I think the pictures tell the whole story. My next event will be Nov. 17th at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, make plans to join us. www.danskids.org

Fishing Report from Ireland

Today I was in Howth, Ireland, about a 40 minute train ride from Dublin. While I was there I ran into several guys that where fishing hard for mackerel, yes mackerel was the fish they all were targeting, but after talking to these guys for about 30 mins I could see that they didn't really care what they caught, they just loved to go fishing. It was nice to see that fisherman here in Ireland are a lot like me, they really don't care what they catch, it's just important to them to be fishing and fishing with friends. these guys were funny, they told jokes, gave me fishing stories and they even caught some fish too.
They all fished the same way. they use a stop bobber and a long shank hook, around a size 4 with a strip of cut squid on it, I asked them why don't you more it around and they said why? we might catch more fish that way, but this way works too.
When i left they had about seven mackerel for four guys, I think I was the only one keeping score.

Fishing report from our trip to Emeryville

This past weekend I went up to Emeryville to film two shows for my TV program. Day one we fished with Jay aboard his boat the New Huck Finn. Jay took us out to the Fallon Islands where we fished for ling cod and rock fish. I like fishing with Jay, he’s a great skipper and fisherman. Jay likes to use live sand dabs for bait, so we started out fishing for dabs for about an hour and after we had a few hundred in the boat we moved a few miles closer to the islands and started ling cod fishing. It was pretty instead. I hooked several lings on my Magic Metal 10 oz jigs and two on my 6 oz. bucktails. Most of the fish were taken on live sand dabs. Our last hour of the day we spent rock cod fishing and that’s all the time it took for everyone to get their 10 fish limit.

Day two we fished aboard the New Salmon Queen, Shim had us fishing close to the bay, only about 8 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. We spent the whole day trolling for salmon. I had never fished like this for salmon, I have trolled for them up in Canada and Alaska and even in Ventura when they used to show up down here, but I had never trolled with 16 others at the same time. This was pretty fun, we most of hooked about 40-50 fish, but only landed 24 of them. We trolled dead anchovies. I really enjoy fishing up in the Bay area out of Emeryville, I think everyone should try a trip out of there every year, I’ll be back up there next September too.

Report from our Northern Cal Fishing Weekend

I just got back from an awesome weekend of fishing up in the No Cal. On day one we fishined with Jay aboard his boat the New Huck Finn, limits on the rock fish and near limits on the ling cod. Day two we fished aboard the New Salmon Queeen with the skipper/owner Shim, we hooked over 40 salmon, we did manage to land around 25 of them. I always have fun fishing up there.

Packing for tomorrows road trip

Tomorrow we head north to the SF Bay area for two fishing/ filming trips out of Emeryville Sport Fishing. Usually picking out what gear to take on this trip was simple, lots of sinkers, heavy jigs and be ready for ling cod and huge rock fish, then last year it all changed. On our trip up here last year we fished for salmon and found huge schools of thresher sharks. sometimes we just stayed in the Bay and fished for halibut. That's part of the fun of fishing up here, you never know what you're going to be fishing for. Sometimes on Saturday we do one thing and then on Sunday we fish for something totally different. check out our face book page over the weekend and i'll post updates of how our fishing trips go, wish us luck....

Lobster Season Is Almost Here

Lobster season opens up this coming weekend so nows the time to check over all your gear and make sure it's ready to go. Take the next few days to check your nets, make sure that there aren't any openings that the bugs can walk out of. Check your bait cages and think about using bait tubes instead of cages, they are harder for the seals to get to. You also need to check all your lines. just take you time and check over everything and make sure you have all your other gear ready to go too, things like flash lights, gages and things like that.

Today's Kids Ocean Fish Trip Report

Today my youth foundation took out 90 kids, we did two half- day fishing trips aboard the San Pedro Special with 45 kids on each trip. The weather was perfect and fishing was great! all the kids on both trips caught fish and they all took fish home to eat. None of these kids had ever been fishing before and none of them had ever been out on the ocean before too. it was a perfect day.
Another nice thing was that all of these kids were from Montebello, my home town. Today's trip was paid for by a grant from the Montebello Police Department. Also fishing today with us were three kids from our kids fishing club at Legg Lake, these kids have all been to eight club meetings and none of them had ever been ocean fishing before, it was great for me to see these kids have such a great time fishing today. All three of them have gone from having no clue about fishing to becoming seasoned lake fishing anglers and today the learned how to catch fish on the ocean. When I got home today I felt beat, it has been a long week, but being on the water today with 90 kids and having these three with us from our kids fishing club made me feel good, I'm still feel beat, but I have a nice smile on my face tonight, life is good......

Dolphin II recap of our 1.5 tuna trip

Yesterday we returned from a 1.5 day tuna trip, as usually our skipper Greg and his talented crew did an awesome job. fishing was a pick bite at best for most of the day, many of our fish came by trolling and then we'd hook up a few fish with live bait, but the bait we had was pretty bad. Greg spent a lot of time at the bait receiver, but the bait for the most part was just bad. it was almost dark and some of our anglers were starting to tear down their gear when the skipper said "I finally found the kelp patty I've been looking for", he told everyone nothing lighter than 40 pound test and if you have heavier break it out. The next 40 mins was what dreams are made of, the patty was loaded, we limited out on dorado and yellowtail here, we also added to our tuna count. At this spot I used one of my Magic Metal jigs and 50 pound test line, I got my limit of dorado, yellowtail and two tuna. My largest dodo went 27 pounds and my tuna only 30 pounds, jackpot was a 51 pound yellowfin, but we also had bluefin and albacore in the 30-40 pound class too. My dad was also on this trip, his secong tuna trip in less then three weeks, before this season he had never been out on a tuna trip. Also on this were two others that brought one of their parents fishing with them, one guy brought his mom and the other guy his dad. They both also had and awesome time on this trip. Greg our skipper and owner of the Dolphin II didn't need to travel over 125 miles south for us, he could of stayed closer to home like most of the other boats did, all day we only saw one other boat and it was traveling north from a 7 day trip. If you have never been on this boat, I suggest you book a trip with Greg while the fish are still here.

85 kids go ocean fishing for the very first time

Last Saturday my youth foundation hosted 85 kids for a free day of sport fishing. None of these kids had ever been fishing before and none had ever been out on the ocean, these kids were all from Montebello. These were two ½ day fishing trips aboard the Sea Anglers. I would give you the total fish count for the day, but it wasn’t important, what was important was that 85 kids got to try a day of fishing! All the kids were given free fishing tackle to use, meal and transportation was provided too. The whole thing was paid for by a grant from the Montebello Police Department, we have more trips heading out with more kids on the 22nd. This coming Saturday my youth foundation will be hosting a free kids fishing club meeting at Legg Lake. Check out our website at www.danskids,org for more details.

Calling All Anglers – Take a Friend Fishing for Free on Saturday Sept. 8

Take a Friend Fishing for Free on Saturday Sept. 8
The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) encourages anglers to go fishing with a friend or neighbor who doesn’t have a license this Saturday, the second of two days in 2012 when fishing licenses are not required.

DFG offers two Free Fishing Days each year – usually around the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend – when it’s legal to fish without a sport fishing license. This year, the Free Fishing Days were set for the Saturdays following Independence Day and Labor Day (July 7 and Sept. 8).

All other fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Every angler must have an appropriate report card if they are fishing for abalone, steelhead or sturgeon anywhere in the state, or for salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems.

Free Fishing Days provide a low-cost way to give fishing a try. Some DFG Regions offer a Fishing in the City program where anglers can go fishing in major metropolitan areas. Fishing in the City and Free Fishing Day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish and fishing tackle. Anglers can even learn how to clean and prepare fish for eating.

Anglers should check the rules and regulations at www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ for the waters they plan to fish. Wardens will be on duty to enforce them. For more information on Free Fishing Days, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/freefishdays.html.

Eclipse Tuna Trip Recap

I just got in from our 1.5 day tuna trip aboard then Eclipse, it was a great trip, The tuna were not very far, about 60 miles south of SD. we had a boat load of anglers as every spot on the boat was sold. Fishing was good early in the morning and we had another snap on the tuna at sunset, in the middle of the day we trolled and looked for yellows and dorado, we didn't get many of those and most of the yellowtail were small. The tuna, bite best on 25 pound test line and a lively sardine. I hope to post some pictures for you tomorrow. On this trip was my dad, it was his first ever offshore tuna fishing trip, he was able to land two of the four fish that he hooked up, nice job dad. In two weeks we have our last tuna trip of the year, it'll be aboard the Dolphin II out of Fisherman's landing in SD, space is limited so sign up soon.

Monday, August 27, 2012

Yesterday a client hired me to guide him for a day of offshore fishing on his boat, he's had it for four years now, but had never been pass Catalina. As offshore trips go we left the dock late, around 6AM, after a quick stop for bait from Nacho, we headed out at 28 knots to the 14 mile bank, about 3/4 of the way there we spotted a sleeping marlin, buy the time the boat came to a stop the fish had seen us and went deep, we slow trolled a live bait hoping to get lucky, but we didn't. At the 14 mile bank there were six boats stacked up on one patty and many others trolling, I didn't see anyone pulling on anything, the plan was from there to run farther south, but the temp charts showed the warmest water about 8 miles outside of the 277 so we ran there, about 4 miles shy of the bank we trolled again, but nothing. then finally on our 4th kelp patty of the day we spotted dorado jumping out of the water. I had my client slide his boat slowly over to the patty and an explained what to expect, of course everyone forgot and we had a mess. three baits hit the water and all three were eaten up but dorados. it took a while, but we landed all three and hit the patty again and again, we ended up with 14 dorado and lost at least that many, by 1PM the wind was starting to pick up and the fishing was slowing down so we called it a day. 1.5 hours later we were back in the harbor. The hardest part of the day was filleting all the fish. my client was happy with all the fish and he had a learn some boat handling and fishing skills, all in all it was a great day.
We still have room for tomorrow nights tuna trip if you like to join us, it's 290.00 PP.

They still are biting

I just checked all the fishing reports for the coast of CA and it looks so good all along the coast. Tuna are every where from, northern Cal to well below the Mexican boarder, even in WA they are getting tuna. In San Francisco you can pick between rock fish, salmon or tuna, they have it all! Down here in Southern Cal just about every landing has tuna and or dorado in their fish counts, It's been many years since I've seen fish counts like this. Get out there and get in on some of this awesome action.

East Cape Fishing report

I just got back 8/14/12 from four days of fishing in the East Cape out of Hotel Buena Vista. I've been fishing in the East Cape for around 28 years now and it just never gets old. On this trip I did ok, not great, but it was good fishing. I ended my trip with two sailfish, both released, many small dorado and a few nice roosterfish. We saw many more sailfish that just didn't want to eat and we had to offer and two good marlin strikes that we just couldn't hook up. This was a trip that I was hosting as part of my TV program. We 32 people in our group, about half of them from Northern Cal. Several people in our group did really well. One boat had two marlin, 12 tuna and 8 dorado all in the same day! several blue marlin were also landed by my group. Two days ago we heard of a 800 pound blue marlin that was landed in a panga. Fishing in the East Cape is always a fun adventure......

East Cape Trip

Tommorrow I'm off to the East Cape for my who knows how many time? maybe over 100 in the past 28 years? Every trip down there is an adventure, you hope to catch a marlin or too, but it's all the other fish and the people you meet is what makes these trips so specail. I really enjoy fishing in Mexico and the East Cape is specail place for me. there are very few places on Earth where you can catch so many different fish, the resorts are all nice and they have good boats and great crews. I wish more of you were going with me on this trip, i'll post updates for you on our Face Book page.
