Ensenada Fishing Report.

The follow is a report that a friend of mine did about his fishing charter business out of Ensenada. Fishing with him is along time friend of our fishing show and owner of the Gail Force, Danny Salas.

With reports of yellows in our backyard Dan Salas owner of the Gail Force and his son 7 year old Christopher decided to take the plunge and charter the It’s 4 Reels despite reports that the weather could be up. We headed out of my slip out of Cruiseport Village around 6:30AM and headed to the bait barge. Still no live bait available in Ensenada. No worries we were armed with every size and color jig that was ever sold as well as the ever reliable frozen squid so if we ran into yellow we would get ‘em. Wind was down but there was definitely a large swell and we made the rounds, South of Todos Santos water temps were 58-59 with a few birds working but no signs of surface fish, North Todos Santos (Punta Norte) cold 53-55 degree water and few birds, North of San Miguel Reef 52 degree water and on down to an area off the tuna pens off Salsipuedes bay. We did not find any surface fish but we did find, with the help of my trustee Furuno FF, a nice reef that we hammered for limits of nice reds that averaged 5-6 lbs, chuckleheads, browns, lingcod, salmon grouper, 1 sheephead and 1 small whitefish. I was using a heavy pink jig and I was ripped twice on fish that took line and I was not able to turn them on straight 65 lb. spectra. Maybe a yellow or a big ling. We’ll never know. Regardless of that we still knocked them dead and the best part is we never fished more than 150 feet of water. We made several passes on the reef and Dan was bringing them up 2 and 3 at a time:

Keep Fishing Fun

I often hear from people that they don't want to go fishing unless they see 1000's of fish on the daily fish counts, if all you want is fish to eat then go to the market, its cheaper and faster, but if you want to live longer and enjoy life better then get on a boat and go fishing, even surf fishing will make you feel better, it works for me. I love to go fishing, I don't care if its on a lake or far offshore chasing tuna or marlin. I just like to roll of the water and the smell of the ocean, I find peace when i'm on the water that I can't find anywhere else. Fishing should be fun, it should be relaxing and it should passed down to kids too.  I hope I see you out on the water soon!

This coming Friday we have our second filming fishing charters for the year, I think we still have one open spot left. The fishing up in the Channels Islands has been hit and miss this year for White Sea bass, the rock fishing has been great. I'm hoping we get a few sea bass and halibut on this trip and then fill our sacks with nice size rock fish. I'll let you know how we do.

Lingcod Fishing

I have getting a lot of e mails this week asking about lingcod fishing, I'm guessing it's because the season just opened on 4/1. Lings are a very aggressive fish, they like to chase down their prey, for that reason I like to use a MM2 heavy jig, such a 10oz MM2. I let it fall all the way to the bottom and then wind it up fast for about ten cranks and then do it over and over until I find a hungry fish. try this method it works.

Tips for Yellowtail Fishing

With yellowtail starting to bite up and down the coast I thought you all might enjoy some tips on yellowtail fishing. if you need more help you might want to order my how-to yellowtail DVD.

I went surf fishing today

This morning I spent a few hours surf fishing. The weather was a little cold by LA standards, I'm sure the rest of the country would of thought it was warm. I spent three hours fishing at two different beaches, I caught most of my fish at Huntington Beach. Even though it was slow fishing it still was nice to be out fishing, I like surf fishing because it's so simple and I enjoy walking in the water. Maybe next time I'll catch more fish, but for today it was good enough.

Yellowtail

Not sure if you all heard the news, but several boats fishing out of San Diego caught a bunch of yellowtail over the weekend, last year the yellow showed up year too. in the old days we used to catch them all the time in April and durning the Day at the Docks fishing event, yellows were what everyone fished for. keep checking the fish counts, it might just be a early season this year.
