Last Charter for 2011

This past Thursday I had my last fishing charter of the year. it was a fun trip and a great way to end the year. The charter was booked as a combo fishing / lobster trip and later to a break water half day trip. We left the dock around 1 PM, after a quick stop at the Natcho's we were off to the wall.

I really enjoy trips like this one were I get to do one on one teaching. Wayne had done some fishing before and so had his girlfriend, but both wanted to learn, this weren't worried about our fish count for the day, they both wanted to become better anglers and that's what we worked on. Wayne also has two boats like I do, I showed him how to find spots to fish and how to set up his boat before he anchors up. We worked on all the little things, picking a good live bait, how to pin it on a hook, how to fish with a buck tail and how to fish with dead squid.

As for the fishing, when we got to the wall it was low tide, about an hour later the current started to move and we started to catch fish, both of them landed several nice size sand bass on a B 52 bucktail with a whole dead squid pinned on, Wayne's girlfriend landed a few nice calico's too and a cabazon. At the last spot we fished Wayne landed several sculpin and another nice sand bass. As the sun set and the weather turned from cool to cold we called it a day. Our fish count was ok and both had pulled on a bunch of fish, but I felt good that they both had learned a lot and they both had a great day. This was a great way to end 2011. Happy New Years Everyone!

Dec 27th Lobster Trip- Just Awesome!

Yesterday I had a fishing / lobster combo trip out of Long Beach, CA.  We left the dock at 2 PM, after a quick stop at the bait barge we were off fishing on the outside of the wall.  We had no current and it was low tide so fishing was slow, but we did land a few calicos and sand bass. Around 6 PM we switched gears and started lobster fishing.  The tide was still very low so I wasn't thinking we'd see many lobsters, but luckily I was wrong. Every pass we made we got a legal lobster or two. After two hours and five lobsters from the first spot, we then traveled about two miles away to a deeper spot. I usually get some legals here, but never have I seen so many huge bugs come from one spot. We had one net that was filled with huge bugs, it had four lobsters in it and two crabs, the the three legals were all huge and the short was just short.  This spot produced 7 legals for us and three of our largest bugs for the night. We ended the day with 12 legals and released another 7 shorts and five of our bugs were huge.
We used salmon heads for bait and got our bugs in 30- 35 feet of water. It was hard to leave because the lobsters were still walking and high tide was about two hours away. At 10:30 we called it a night and headed in. My charter prices are posted on my website if you'd like to book a trip with me.

Ugly Weather Last Night

Last night I had another lobster fishing charter, the weather report looked ok, not great, but then it's Dec so I thought all should be fine. We left the dock around 4:30 PM and in the 30 min ride out of the harbor the weather turned very ugly. We could see lighting in the distant and the wind and rain came. The rain didn't bother me, but the lighting was enough for me to call the trip off. By the time we got back to the dock it was a full on storm, I know people want me to put them on the fish, but I understand that in number one job is to bring everyone back on land safe. Maybe the lighting would of stayed away, but I couldn't take that chance. I'll be back out there when the weather settles down. Have a great weekend everyone.

Indian Rock Fishing Charter Re-Cap

This past Saturday 12/10 we had our last fishing charter of the year, it was with our longtime friend Chris Randal aboard his boat the Indian out of H & M landing in San Diego. The weather for this trip was perfect, with everyone on board by 8:45 we were off and heading south the 40 miles to the fishing grounds. Some of us got up early around 5AM to watch the solar eclipses, it was something special too see and being off the beach as far as we were we had a great view of the event.

It was around 6:30 before we started fishing. Our first stop produced some nice reds, but on our second drift we got nailed my large squid, Chris had to run to the other end of the bank to get away from giant squid. After that it was game on and great fishing. We had limits for everyone on the boat and they all were nice size fish including a lot of huge reds. All of my fish were taken with 1 oz B 52 bucktails used in dropper loops. This was a great way to end a long year and it's always great to fish with Chris and the crew of the Indian. The Indian has rock fish trips every Wed and on the weeknds too, check out his website for details.

Combo fishing / lobster report for 12/06 Long Beach

Yesterday I had a combo fishing / lobster fishing charter, we left the dock a little late for a trip like this, around 2:30PM. After a quick stop to see Natcho for some live bait we were off to fish along the break wall. The tide was slack so fishing was a little tough, but we did manage to land about a dozen sculpin, some sand bass and a few calico's too. Most of the fish were taken on dead squid pinned on a 1oz. B 52 bucktail jig. The fishing got better after sunset, but we needed to start lobster fishing.
I fished my normal spots in around 30 feet of water with salmon heads for bait. We had nothing for hours, so I moved us to a little area  towrad the Queeen Mary. On the way there we got stopped by the Coast Guard. Everything went well and they wished us luck. I'm glad they did, beacuse at our next spot we got them. in the next two hours we got seven lobsters, they were the only lobsters for the night, but they all were legal, we also got over 20 legal size crabs too. All in all it was a great night with new clients, these guys drove down from Fresno to fish with me.
