Packing for tomorrows road trip

Tomorrow we head north to the SF Bay area for two fishing/ filming trips out of Emeryville Sport Fishing. Usually picking out what gear to take on this trip was simple, lots of sinkers, heavy jigs and be ready for ling cod and huge rock fish, then last year it all changed. On our trip up here last year we fished for salmon and found huge schools of thresher sharks. sometimes we just stayed in the Bay and fished for halibut. That's part of the fun of fishing up here, you never know what you're going to be fishing for. Sometimes on Saturday we do one thing and then on Sunday we fish for something totally different. check out our face book page over the weekend and i'll post updates of how our fishing trips go, wish us luck....

Lobster Season Is Almost Here

Lobster season opens up this coming weekend so nows the time to check over all your gear and make sure it's ready to go. Take the next few days to check your nets, make sure that there aren't any openings that the bugs can walk out of. Check your bait cages and think about using bait tubes instead of cages, they are harder for the seals to get to. You also need to check all your lines. just take you time and check over everything and make sure you have all your other gear ready to go too, things like flash lights, gages and things like that.

Today's Kids Ocean Fish Trip Report

Today my youth foundation took out 90 kids, we did two half- day fishing trips aboard the San Pedro Special with 45 kids on each trip. The weather was perfect and fishing was great! all the kids on both trips caught fish and they all took fish home to eat. None of these kids had ever been fishing before and none of them had ever been out on the ocean before too. it was a perfect day.
Another nice thing was that all of these kids were from Montebello, my home town. Today's trip was paid for by a grant from the Montebello Police Department. Also fishing today with us were three kids from our kids fishing club at Legg Lake, these kids have all been to eight club meetings and none of them had ever been ocean fishing before, it was great for me to see these kids have such a great time fishing today. All three of them have gone from having no clue about fishing to becoming seasoned lake fishing anglers and today the learned how to catch fish on the ocean. When I got home today I felt beat, it has been a long week, but being on the water today with 90 kids and having these three with us from our kids fishing club made me feel good, I'm still feel beat, but I have a nice smile on my face tonight, life is good......

Dolphin II recap of our 1.5 tuna trip

Yesterday we returned from a 1.5 day tuna trip, as usually our skipper Greg and his talented crew did an awesome job. fishing was a pick bite at best for most of the day, many of our fish came by trolling and then we'd hook up a few fish with live bait, but the bait we had was pretty bad. Greg spent a lot of time at the bait receiver, but the bait for the most part was just bad. it was almost dark and some of our anglers were starting to tear down their gear when the skipper said "I finally found the kelp patty I've been looking for", he told everyone nothing lighter than 40 pound test and if you have heavier break it out. The next 40 mins was what dreams are made of, the patty was loaded, we limited out on dorado and yellowtail here, we also added to our tuna count. At this spot I used one of my Magic Metal jigs and 50 pound test line, I got my limit of dorado, yellowtail and two tuna. My largest dodo went 27 pounds and my tuna only 30 pounds, jackpot was a 51 pound yellowfin, but we also had bluefin and albacore in the 30-40 pound class too. My dad was also on this trip, his secong tuna trip in less then three weeks, before this season he had never been out on a tuna trip. Also on this were two others that brought one of their parents fishing with them, one guy brought his mom and the other guy his dad. They both also had and awesome time on this trip. Greg our skipper and owner of the Dolphin II didn't need to travel over 125 miles south for us, he could of stayed closer to home like most of the other boats did, all day we only saw one other boat and it was traveling north from a 7 day trip. If you have never been on this boat, I suggest you book a trip with Greg while the fish are still here.

85 kids go ocean fishing for the very first time

Last Saturday my youth foundation hosted 85 kids for a free day of sport fishing. None of these kids had ever been fishing before and none had ever been out on the ocean, these kids were all from Montebello. These were two ½ day fishing trips aboard the Sea Anglers. I would give you the total fish count for the day, but it wasn’t important, what was important was that 85 kids got to try a day of fishing! All the kids were given free fishing tackle to use, meal and transportation was provided too. The whole thing was paid for by a grant from the Montebello Police Department, we have more trips heading out with more kids on the 22nd. This coming Saturday my youth foundation will be hosting a free kids fishing club meeting at Legg Lake. Check out our website at www.danskids,org for more details.

Calling All Anglers – Take a Friend Fishing for Free on Saturday Sept. 8

Take a Friend Fishing for Free on Saturday Sept. 8
The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) encourages anglers to go fishing with a friend or neighbor who doesn’t have a license this Saturday, the second of two days in 2012 when fishing licenses are not required.

DFG offers two Free Fishing Days each year – usually around the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend – when it’s legal to fish without a sport fishing license. This year, the Free Fishing Days were set for the Saturdays following Independence Day and Labor Day (July 7 and Sept. 8).

All other fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Every angler must have an appropriate report card if they are fishing for abalone, steelhead or sturgeon anywhere in the state, or for salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems.

Free Fishing Days provide a low-cost way to give fishing a try. Some DFG Regions offer a Fishing in the City program where anglers can go fishing in major metropolitan areas. Fishing in the City and Free Fishing Day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish and fishing tackle. Anglers can even learn how to clean and prepare fish for eating.

Anglers should check the rules and regulations at www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ for the waters they plan to fish. Wardens will be on duty to enforce them. For more information on Free Fishing Days, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/freefishdays.html.
