Fishing the Wall

Just before Christmas I did some calico bass fishing along the Breakwall out of Long Beach. The fishing over the weekend was great! Today I went out and the fishing was a lot slower. It looked like today there just wasn't any current and the kelp was straight up with no movement. All the fish I've been hooking were on deep diving crankbaits. It's hard to believe it's December and the bass fishing is still good. I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year's and wanted to thank you all again for supporting me, my youth foundation and my TV program.

Nov. East Cape Trip

We just got back from three days of fishing in the East Cape. It was one of the best fishing trips I've had in Mexico in years. There was plenty of fish and they all were hungry. Most of the fish I landed were tuna in the 18- 30 pound class. several people in our group landed tuna over 60 pounds and one angler had a fish over 100 pounds on for three hours before losing it. If you've never been to the East Cape you have to try it. I host two trips a year down there. So make plans to join me down there next July.

Icon

Last month we had a trip aboard the Icon our of Long Beach Sport Fishing with skipper Shawn Morgan. Shawn is one of those skippers who really enjoys fishing and likes being out on the water. The water was cold and all we could do was target rock fish. A few of the anglers landed nice size ling cods. I guess it was because this was a 3/4 day trip but we had a lot of kids on this trip. It was great to see all the kids having fun and catching fish. It's great knowing that my viewers are out there taking kids fishing. I wish everyone would do that.

Emeryville- HuckFinn

Last month we traveled north up to the SF Bay area. We fished on the New Huck Finn out of Emeryville with Captain Jay. After getting a tank of live bait in San Francisco we headed out under the Golden Gate Bridge north to Point Reyes in beautiful calm waters for some rockfish and lingcod fishing. Fishing in 90 to 180 feet of water it was limit style fishing . The lingcod were from legal length to over 30lbs. with many over the 20lb. We also caught big blue rockfish, black rockfish red snappers and johnny bass. This was fun fishing with light tackle 2olb to 30lb. test gear and everyone kept their camera's clicking with the scenic landscapes of San Francisco. Everyone in our group landed limits of both rock fish and ling cod. The fishing up north has also been great for Albacore, even though we didn't target them on this trip, but Capt. Jay told me that this year they'll catch more tuna up there than salmon. If you have never tried fishing out of here I strongly suggest you try it. I've been up here a fe time know I i've had great trips on all of them and I can't wait to get back.

277 Spot

Today I went fished the 277 spot and the East End of Catalina Island kelp patty fishing. I didn't have a film crew with me just a few friends. We left the dock late around 7 AM and after picking up some bait we headed toward Catalina Island. We were about 10 miles off the East End when we spotted a marlin, we tossed a live bait to it but it never bit. We worked our way over toward the 277 spot where we found a kelp patty with one big dorado hiding under it. We tossed several live baits at it but it didn't want anything we had to offer. We ended the day not catching anything, but the weather was great and I had three friends out on the water with me, yes fishing today was slow but being there 45 miles out at sea hunting for a marlin I felt like I was home.

Tuesday we have a charter out of H&M Landing in San Diego, it's a two day tuna fishing trip, Yes I'll have my film crew with me and you'll get to watch it later this year on TV, I'm sure I'll catch more fish on this trip than I did today, but fishing is what I love to do, even on those days when I don't catch anything.

Canadian Princess Resort

We just got back from three days of fishing in Canada. I hosted a group of 20 anglers to the Canadian Princess Resort, we all had a great time. The fishing was good, not red hot and everyone landed salmon and halibut. The weather couldn't have been any better. In the five days we were in Canada we had NO rain! It was in the high 70's everday and the water was flat clam too. it looked and felt more like Baja than it did Canada. All the fish we taken on small metal jigs and by drift fishing. Please visit the photo galley on our website to see all the pictures from this great trip.

Catalina Island

Today we had a charter to Catalina Island aboard the Gail Force. The first stop of the day was our best bite of the day. On my first cast with a Magic Metal lite I hooked up a legal size calico bass, on my next cast it nailed a nice size bonita and for the next hour I could do no wrong, the fishing was as good as it gets at Catalina Island for calicos.
Later in the day the bite switched to live squid. I used a 1/2 ounce B-52 bucktail with a whole live squid pinned on and landed several nice size bass. Like I said the fishing was great today, check out Larry's blog for more details of this trip.

East Cape

Last week we fished the East Cape, Baja Mexico out of Hotel Buena Vista. The weather was perfect and for most of the boats the was good to great. I had a tougher time only landing two marlin and three tuna in three days of fishing. One guy in our group who flew in from the SF Bay area and watches us on Comcast Sports landed three Blue Marlin in just two days of fishing.
Most boats worked a wide area for their fish, but the best catches seemed to come rather close to the hotel. Ed Payne from the San Diego area found schools of dorado and several marlin less than five miles from the hotel. Our next East Cape trip with be the first weekend in Nov. For details check out the fishing charters page here on our website.

Catalina Island

Yesterday, Larry and I filmed a show over at Catalina Island. The ride over went well even though we took my little boat, the 24 foot Skeeter handled the channel well. We started out fishing at Arrow Point, but we had no current so we drove around to the back side of the island. West Cove held a lot of fish and we filmed most of the show in that one spot. The Calicos ate both live and dead baits. It was preety wide-open for about two hours. We ended the day on the front side of the island. I was tossing thin jerk baits and crankbaits. My largest fish of the day was taken this way. We left the island around 3 PM and it only took about one hour and twenty minutes to make it back to Long Beach.

This week I have two fishing trips. Wed. is a foundation kids trip and Friday we'll be filming aboard the Freelance out of Newport.

Have a great week, Dan

Last week I fished Hawaii

I know it seems hard to believe but last week I made my first trip ever over to Hawaii. I fished aboard the Wild Bunch with Capt. Richard Silva and his crew. We had one marlin strike and two small dorado came by and chewed on a few of the baits but we never hooked anything. The weather wasn’t every good offshore, but the boat and the crew where great and I’d be happy to fish with them again. The crew did everything they could to make sure we all had a safe and good trip. If you’d like to phone number for the Wild Bunch please e-mail me and I’ll be glad to share it with you.Hawaii.

Lake Huites, Mexico, Bass fishing

Hi everyone, I just got back from four days in Mexico. I fished for two days at out of Trophy Bass Lodge in Lake Huites, Mexico. This was my 3rd time to this lake. By far it was the best fishing I have ever had there. Both days I landed bass over 6 pounds and I had one close to eight, if not a little bigger than that. The staff at Trophy Bass Lodge was great. They have good boats and the food and service was the best I ever experienced at that lake. Keith Warren was there too filming a show and he said he had caught several bass over eight pounds during his stay there and that he had lost a few fish that were much larger. I caught fish several different ways, on worms and crank baits. Most of my larger fish came on large crank baits. I fished with 30 pound Ugly Braid and 15 pound test Cajun Red Line. All the rods were All Star Rods. I’ll download more pictures from this trip later, but if your looking for a great bass fishing trip in Mexico I’d suggest you contact the people at Trophy Bass Lodge, 877-755-4950. Dan
