Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation Kids Fishing Club Meeting for Aug.

As many of you know my youth foundation now has it's our kids fishing club at Legg Lake in So El Monte, we even have our own club house there too. This past Saturday we had our monthly meeting, it was a small turnout with only 8 kids, but I'm sure now that the kids are back in school our club will grow rather fast.
This week I taught the kids some basic skills, how- to tie two different fishing knots and how- to pin on a live worm, we also did some fish ID stuff too, because last month some of the kids didn't know the difference between a bass and a blue gill. Ater the 35 mins in the club house we spent 20 mins pratcing casting, first a normal log cast and then picthing a bait into a small ring. The kids all caught on rather fast, we have only had three meetings so far, but I can see some of the kids already improving, it's really cool to see first hand.

after the class room stuff was done we spent the next 2 1/2 hours walking around the lake, looking at fish, watching them first and then trying to catch them. Our fish count for the day was four blue gill and one small bass, all of the fish were released. After fishing we ended our meeting with hot dogs and soft drinks, all in all it was a great meeting and I enjoy teaching, it doesn't matter if it's here with my kids fishing club our on my boat on a private fishing charter, it's all go. Our next kids club meeting will be on Sept 10th at 9AM. you can get more info about my youth foundation at http://www.danskids.org/.

Yesterday's Private Charter Fishing Report- Teaching a kid he can catch a fish

Yesterday I had another private this time on my skiff. This trip was a little different from many of my others, fishing with me was 16 year old who loves my TV show, but doesn’t get to do a lot of fishing because his parents don’t fish. His dad had made a nice donarion to my youth foundation, more than what I charge for a ½ charter so I offered to take his kid fishing.
First off the fishing report, fishing was ok, not great, conditions were ugly, dropping tide, lots of wind and the current was going in a different direction that the wind was blowing. It was what it was and I had no choice, but to stick it out and try to find fish for the kid. We ended the day with 15 sand bass, 11 calicos and a few sculpin. I only let him keep two calico’s and four sand bass, I try to get my clients to release all the calico’s I can, but he wanted to for fish tacos.
Here is something I wanted to share with you from yesterday and I see this all the time on party boats. This kids from the time he got on the boat told me if he didn’t think he’d catch any fish today and that it was ok, because he never catchs fishwhen he goes fishing, as he told me “I’m not expecting to catch anything today.” I told him over and and over as we headed out that he was going to catch a fish today. At the first sport I hooked two sand bass on my frist two cast, but I noticed the kids has having a hard time and with every fish I caught, ne because more sure that he wasn’t going to catch even one fish. My next cast I hooked a nice sandie, I set the hook and the I handed the fish off to him. He landed it and was starting to feel better, next cast I did the same thing and then I stopped fishing for a while I worked with him on his fishing skills.
After two hours of hands on, one on one teaching and fishing, the kid finally believed there wasn’t a fish in the ocean he could catch. I tell people this all the time and I’ll say again at my seminar tonight at the Tuner’s store in Torrance. Fishing fish is easy and if you believe you can catch a fish then you will. Like the bumper stickers say, Fear No Fish, that’s why I guess I see so many Dead Fish….

Fishing report from Ensenada, Mexico

Here's a short fishing report from my friend and guide Louie out of Ensenada, Mexico

It's been awhile since reporting in but we have been fishing. Although we have yet to score on tuna and kelp paddy yellows due to them being out of our range (90+ miles) these fish are out there and moving up. Problem right now is the weather. We headed out yesterday looking for paddies and didn't get more than 15 miles outside of Todos Santos Island and it went from bad to worse. Buoyweather called for nasty conditions and they were right. 5-8 foot swell, washing machine conditions, whitecaps at 8am and wind building. The good thing about Ensenada is there are Plan B's and Plan C's. Plan C worked for us and Angel, Cesar and I still managed several ling cod, sand bass bass, rockfish and 6 halibut to 15 lbs:

Awesome underwater dorado footage

http://youtu.be/5wpo5IMnNoI

After catching 12 of these dorado and releasing 10 of them I put my rod down and had my cameraman pick up our underwater camera and flim the dodo's as I hand feed them from above. I have many more clips of this on my You Tube Channel. This was filmed two weeks ago durning my group trip to the East Cape. I hope you all enjoy this.

Like I told you guys last month, this season I've been using new Kershaw Pro Grade Series knife for cleaning fish on all my private fishing charters. Many of you have been asking me if I was still happy with the Kershaw Pro Grade knives. I wanted you all to know that I am still very happy with them, I use them every week on everything from calico bass, yellowtail to large sharks and I'm very happy they way they have worked for me. They have several new knives in their pro grade series, I have had a chance to use three of them and they all have worked great for me. if you are looking for a great knife for cleaning fish for your boat or for home, I suggest you pick up a Kershaw Pro Grade Series knife, you're going to enjoy using them.

Live bait now at Belmont Pier, in Long Beach, CA

When I was a kid many, many years ago we were always able to buy live anchoives on Belmont Pier, I'm glad to report you can now buy them there again, they are selling both live sardines and anchovies there and the cost is 4 chovies or 2 sardines for a one dollar. This should be great news too for you all kayak and tubers.

Here are Pictures from yesterday's private fishing charter

Here are Pictures from yesterday's private fishing charter

Here's a fishing report from my two private charters over the weekend.

This past weekend I had two private charters, one on my big boat and the other off my skiff. On Saturday I had a four anglers, three adults and one high school age kid, only one of them had been fishing before. This was a 1/2 day trip so I couldn't travel too far, I started off fishing some of the stones outside of the breakwater, but fishing was slow so I moved us over along the breakwater. it only took us a few minutes to land our first fish. fishing was good for both calico's and sand bass, we did lose one WSB and a big sand bass that the guys tried to bounce onto the boat. We also landed a 50 pound thresher shark too.

On Sunday I only had one angler and he wanted to try to land a thresher shark, he had also booked a 1/2 day charter, but on my skiff. We started out slow trolling for several hours and saw one shark, but we never did get a strike so I asked him if he wanted to try bass fishing on the breakwater. I started off the same place I had fished the day before and we hooked and released a few calico's there, the wind was starting to pick up so we moved down the line and I anchored us a ways off the wall, this time the bass were hungry. over the next two hours we landed over 45 bass, all of the calico's were released, my client wanted fish to take home so I let him take a limit of sand bass, I didn't keep any fish for myself, all we had for live bait was large sardines and the fish loved them. I also did catch about 12 fish on a 1 oz B52 bucktail with a Gulp bait pinned on. I have two more private charters this week and I'll let you all know how I do. if you'd like to book a private charter with me you can see my rates on my website at http://www.sport-fishing.com/.

Tuna Fishing Report From our Charter aboard The Eclipse

On Wednesday we were about 150 miles south of San Diego and 60 miles offshore looking for tuna on our charter aboard the Eclise. We were hoping for wide open fishing and we found it, but it happened only one time. The rest of our day was spent trolling looking for another school of fish. Our tuna came at 10AM and our doraod bit arounf 7PM and the rest of our day was spent trolling. We ended the day with 19 bluefin, 3 yellowfin tuna and five dorado. The largest fish was a 60-70 pound bluefun tuna.

The westher picked up at the end of the day and we had a rough ride home. The skipper Mark and his crew were great! I only wished we could of founf more fish, all in all it was a good trip and everyone in our group got along great. We have two more tun trips this season, so go to our website and sign up for today.

Kids Smiles Brighten Oceanside Pier at Annual IGFA Event

What do you get when you mix in a beautiful southern California day, youngsters eager to catch a fish (any fish), and a hard-working group of local and more distant volunteers? The answer in this case was the second annual I.G.F.A. 2011 Oceanside Pier Kids' Fishing Derby held last week.

Sponsored by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), United Pier and Shore Anglers of California (UPSAC), NOAA, and the Oceanside Pier Bait and Tackle, the event was declared a rousing success by all.
Free loaner rods and reels, free bait, free lunches (more than 300 served), and help from more than 25 volunteers greeted the 109 young anglers and their parents.

Although the fishing was a little slow, the anglers, many who were fishing for the first time, managed to pull in a nice variety of SoCal species that included halibut, kelp bass, barred surfperch, walleye surfperch, spotfin croaker, yellowfin croaker, white croaker, queenfish, sargo, jacksmelt, mackerel, and a baby bat ray. The capture of the fish yielded ten age-group winners.

The winners were: 6-year-old Carlos Cruz, 7-year-old Emily Dipitro, 8-year-old Kathryn Oh, 9-year-old Riley Bryant, 10-year-old Angel Flores, 11-year-old Elvis Rivera, 12-year-old Claire Christy, 13-year-old Mikey Pugh, 14-year-old Edward Dizon, and 15-year-old David Hernandez (who was the grand champion in 2010). The Grand Champion this year was Mikey Pugh. Each of the winners received a new rod and reel, an autographed copy of Pier Fishing in California, and a beautiful IGFA certificate. The grand champion also will have his name engraved on a perpetual trophy that stays at the pier. Twenty youngsters won free raffle prizes and all of the participants received “goody bags” filled with a plethora of gifts.

East Cape Report

Sorry for being away, but for the past week we were filming down in the East Cape in Baja Mexico. I have not seen the fishing as good as it was for our trip in many years. I landed and released 8 marlin, two sailfish. plus lots of dorado, roosterfish and one tuna. I hosted 42 people from all over the country that watch my TV program at Hotel Buena Vista in the East Cape. Everything went great, even the weather wasn't good too. Everyone in our group catch fish and they all had a great time. I have many more pictures from the trip posted on our face book page. I'll tell you more about the trip later this week.

Day one here at the East Cape, Mexico

I've been coming down to the EAST CAPE for over 25 years. I'm down here right now and it's hot. fishing was good today, lots of dorado and I also landed a sail fish and one marlin, all the billfish were realized.

I know a lot of people are still afraid to come to Mexico, all of the drama in Mexico is drug related, none of that is here in the East Cape, I know American are afraid to come down here and they shouldn't. I always feel safe down here, this rip is no different.

I don't know if this makes any sense or not, but in the movie Up In The Air, George C. says something like "when i'm cursing at 35000 feet I feel like I'm home" Today as we headed offshore, about 27 miles out and the skipper slowed the boat and we dropped the trolling lines in the water, I too had that feeling, Like I was back home...

I love it down here and I'm fished in baja around 60-90 times over the past 27 years, not all my trips have been here and not all of them did I catch a lot of fish, but each time I dropped a line in the water I felt like I was home....

If you have never been here, it's time to make that trip down here, the fishing is awesome!
