The next to the last day of the year
Today is just about cleaning things up, I have to take our youth foundation truck for a smog check and then it's just cleaning up in here. Old videos have to come off the hard drives and my office is a mess, I guess I'll try to battle that too. I was hoping to go out and fish the break wall over the weekend, but the weather doesn't look all that great, I guess I'll spend the weekend cleaning up my tackle box, storing old gear and getting everything ready for next season, I've learned over the years that trying to get my tackle ready the night before a trip is way to late for me, I also like to have those little Plano boxes filled ready to go, I just grab what I need to put them all in a large soft bag. I still enjoy playing with all that fishing gear. Have a great New Year's everyone!

New California Fishing License
If you have tried to buy your 2011 CA fishing license you already know this, but it was a surprise for me when I tried to buy fishing licenses as gifts for Christmas. You no longer can just buy one for other people without having their ID in your hand. You must have a drivers license or passport or some other type of ID with you when you buy your fishing license now. I don't know which ID's they will honor other than the two I listed here. The stores now have a special printer that they use to print out our license from Sacramento with. Also don't go the day that you plan to go fishing or even the day before. One store that I visited was having trouble connecting to the server so they could even order a license for a customer. I just thought I'd give you a heads up about this.

Helping to Bring Christmas to 4000 people, It was a Great Day
Yesterday I helped feed over 4000 people in Montebello, we handed out over 3000 toys to kids and over 800 families took home a large box of food for Christmas dinner.
I was chairman for this event, but by no means did I do this alone, this was a team effort, hundreds of people worked together so that these 4000 people would have a Christmas. I know to these 4000 people it was a great day, for me it was even better, I know today was about giving service, but I really feel I got back more than I gave today. Today was a great day. I hope you all have a very merry Christmas!

Christmas gift idea
With Christmas so close and us all so strapped for cash I wanted to share a gift idea that I do everyone year for several people close to me, I buy them next years fishing license. Also if they like to lobster fish, you might want to also get the a new lobster card. the lobster card is a nice cheap gift, a full fishing license will cost you a lot more.
I wish the weather was better, I'd like to be out there lobster fishing right now too, but it sounds like this rain i going to be around for a while.
take care and have a great Christmas!

Last fishing trip for 2010 report
Last Saturday we had our last fishing trip of the year, it was a rock fishing trip aboard the Indian out of H & M Landing in San Diego. we had OK fishing, nothing really large but most people did get limits. even though we had 8-10 foot seas and cold weather, it was still nice to be back out at sea.

getting ready for tomorrow trip
I plan to do all my fishing tomorrow with either B 52 bucktails or Magic Metal Jigs for the larger rock fish and ling cods. I plan to target lings and the way I like to fish is with a 10oz MM2. What I do is let the jig fall all the way to the ocean floor and then crank it up and ten turn very fast, so it looks like it's trying to escape,if the is a ling anywhere close by it'll chase the jig and eat it, if i don't get bit I slowly let me jig fall back to the bottom and do it again. Try this nest time you go bottom fishing.

This weekends fishing charter
this week we have our last fishing charter of the year. It's a rock fishing trip aboard the Indian out of San Diego. It's funny how we start and end each year with a rock fishing trip. People are asking me what special gear they need to bring along with them and I always tell them to make sure they have a selection of B 52 bucktail jigs, you want the 1/2 OZ ones for your gangon and the 6OZ bucktails for fishing for lings and red on the bottom, I would never go rock fishing without them.

Dan's Fish Batter Mix now in Turner's
Surf Fishing
I've been getting reports that the local surf fishing is still very good. remember you want to fish on incoming tides and you want to use a short leader, try to keep you bait right on the bottom, the fish will be swimming with their head pointed down looking for food, so make sure you bait is down where they can find it. go out there and have some fun.

Cold water bass fishing
when the water turns cold you can sill catch both calico bass and sand bass, you just need to fish slower. Here is a picture of a friend of mine fishing a local rock pile with me last winter and a large sand bass he took on one of my B 52 bucktail jigs. the key was to fish your bucktail very slowly on and around the rock piles, this is a large and bass and you can fish fish with this one year around and using a B 52 bucktail is a great way to catch a fish with this one.

Lobster time!
Now that the storms are hitting us, this would be a great time to go lobster fishing. Just check the weather and make sure it's safe to be on the water, but after a storm is a great time to catch lobsters, the bugs like storms because they kick out food for them to eat. Try to get out there this week!

more tuna
looks like the boats in San Diego found the tuna again, check out the fish counts, they have been improving all week. See what a little warm weather can do.
Thursday, September 23, 2010
our warm weather
finally we are getting warm weather and the fishing is starting to improve along our coast. there is good bite finally on calico bass, anglers are seeing a lot of thresher sharks around and hopefully the tuna will start to bite again very soon. I now it'll be Oct in a few days, but don't put your fishing tackle away just yet.
New in - Store seminar dates
Another tip
talking to guys up north they are using small hooks, they say they are having better luck with size 2 hooks, I usually use rather large hook like a size 2/0-3/0 when I'm fishing for white sea bass. If you're having problems getting them to bite you might want to try using a smaller hook.

Tip for White Sea Bass
Tuesday, September 21, 2010
White Sea Bass!!!!
on our way home from Emeryville we stopped off at Monterrey to take a look around. As we walked over to the boat ramp I noticed that every boat had some white sea bass. some of these fish we monsters. most of the fish were in the 30- 50 pound range, with several over 60 pounds! the locals told me that this bite has been going on for several months now. they don't even have live squid up there to fish with, all they use is dead squid and the fly line them too, no sinkers. I'm hoping to get up there later this week and try it out for myself.
New Salmon Queen fish report
Sunday we fished with Shim aboard the New Salmon Queen out of Emeryville Sport Fishing. The weather was a little wet, we had rain all morning, but the afternoon was nice and dry. we started off fishing along the beach, just north of the bay. There we landed several nice size halibut. we ended the day over at the islands for nice rock fish. it's always nice to fish up here, I really enjoy both the New Salmon Queen and the New Huck Finn.

Today's fishing report from No Cal
Today we fished aboard the New Huckfinn, out of Emeryville. The seas were nice and flat and the fishing was very good, I limited out on rock fish including several nice size reds. All my fish were taken on B 52 bucktails and magic metal jigs, visit our face book fan page and see pictures of today's trip.

Tuna Fishing Tip
if you are heading out for tuna this weekend on your own boat here's a fishing tip for you. Most years it's easy to catch a tuna on your own boat, you just troll around until your find some hungry fish. This year that will not work. You need to use your fish finder, find a school of fish, get out a little bit in front of them and then stop your boat and start fishing with bait. toss out a little chum and see if you can get the fish to bite. If you see that the fish have stopped and are holding under and around your boat then don't move, wait them out for at least 30 minutes. You need to slow down if you want to catch a tuna this year. Try this out this weekend and you just might catch a few fish. Good luck!

Sculpin are biting
It's sad to say but the be best bite right now in our local waters is for sculpin. It's almost Sept and we should have yellowtail and calico bass everywhere along our coast and we don't, I hoping this warm weather will improve our fishing very soon. If you are going sculpin fishing this week I'd suggest you bring along a few B-52 bucktails. you'll need a 6oz. if you're only fishing with one bait or two 1/2 oz. bucktails if you're doing to use a dropper loop rig. either way this jigs work awesome on the sculpin. Pin on a strip of squid and you're ready to go.

where to fish
with the tuna staying away for now, I'd suggest you fish the local kelp beds or over to one of the local islands. Catalina has had a great bite for months now on calicos, bonita and some barries, if the water ever warms up you can expect the yellow to turn on too.

Surf Fishing in Mexico
If I was to host a weekend surf fishing get away to Rosarito would anyone here sign up and go? Just asking because we are looking into adding a few more travel trips for this fall.
San Bass on a MM7
yesterday was the first time I had ever hooked a sand bass on a surface jig. we were fishing aboard the Fisherman III and there was a mix of large barries and sand bass around the boat. I landed four nice barries, but I also landed two huge sand bass on the MM7's too. next time your fishing for sandies and you see them up toward the surface try a MM7, it just might surprise you, it did me.
Thursday, August 12, 2010
Fisherman III
today we had a fishing charter out of H & M landing in san Diego. the fishing was pretty good today, we landed a lot of gig sand bass and some nice size barries. I was able to land both barries and sand bass on the MM7's today. the weather was perfect for fishing too. you can see pictures from today's trip on our face book fan page.

a good live bait
You would think that everyone would know what a good live bait look like, but I've learned over the years that's not the case. A good bait is one that has all its scales, is swimming very good and hard in the bait tank and doesn't have a bright red nose like Rodolph. Remember the bait you pick and pin on to your hook is never going to swim as good as it does there in the bait tank, so pick a good bait, take you time and make a good choice, if you're always picking a good bait, you're going to start catching more fish. Also don't fish you bait too long, you should be changing you bait every 2-3 minutes. Now go pick a good bait and catch some fish.....
Wednesday, August 4, 2010
live bait fishing
I don't care if we talking about tuna fishing far offshore or fishing the local kelp beds for calico bass, it is very important that if you're going to use live bait that you pick out a good bait to start with. Too often I see people grab a dead or half dead bait and then get upset because they never get a bite. some extra time at the bait tank if you need to, but make sure whatever bait you pick is the best one in the bait well......
